History

From the earliest days of the Soviet Union creation the government paid special attention to the development of energy sector and electrification of the country.
For the purpose of construction of power stations and for the training of specialized construction and installation personnel a joint-stock company "Teplo i Sila" (Heat and Power) was established in 1924 with departments in a number of large industrial centres.
The Kiev Design & Installation Department of that company started its activities as an independent entity in September 1926. This was a starting point of Pivdenteploenergomontazh, VAT history (Yuzhteploeneromontazh is a Russian spelling of the company name, under which it was known during the Soviet time and that originated the company abbreviated name "UTEM”, generally accepted and used until now).
In the period from 1926 to 1940 the company installed and put into operation equipment at power facilities in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, with a total capacity of 187 MW.
During the Great Patriotic War the establishment was evacuated to the city of Chelyabinsk (Ural region). Altogether over the period from 1941 to 1943, in the Ural region the company commissioned 365 MW of generating capacities at power plants of Chelyabinsk, Magnitogorsk, Karaganda, Orsk, Ufa, Orenburg, Kopeysk, Troitsk.
The history of the enterprise is inseparably linked with the history of energy development of the Soviet Union. For the past 85 years, the company has passed a long way - from the installation of low-power boilers, steam engines, turbines, process equipment of industrial facilities to the installation of equipment for TPPs with 800 MW turbo- and steam generators having an output of 2650 tons of steam per hour, equipment for NPPs with reactors and turbogenerators having a capacity of 440 MW and 1000 MW.
Over the many years of its operation, the company has put into production over 37 million kilowatt of generating capacities, including about 32 million kW in Ukraine, that accounts for 57 percent of Ukraine’s installed electrical power capacities. The company has commissioned the equipment in power plants of the republics of Moldova, Belarus, Armenia, the Russian Federation and others.
The UTEM specialists installed equipment of and commissioned such power industry giants as:
  • Ladyzhyn TPS - 1,800 MW
  • Kiev TPS-5 - 700 MW
  • Kiev TPS-6 - 500 MW
  • Burshtyn TPS - 2,400 MW
  • Dobrotvir TPS - 700 MW
  • Moldavian TPS (Moldova) - 2400 MW
  • Kryvy Rih TPS - 3000 MW
  • Berezovskaya TPS (Belarus) - 900 MW
  • Zaporizhzhya TPS - 3,600 MW
  • Tripolye TPS - 1800 MW
As well as heat and power stations in Odessa, Chernihiv, Kalush, Polotsk and Minsk (Belarus), Argayash (the RF), Chisinau and Balti (Moldova), Yerevan and Kirovokan (Armenia), power plants of many industrial facilties of Ukraine and of other former Soviet republics.
There were put into production 13 320 MW of power capacities at NPPs:
  • Chernobyl NPP - 4000 MW
  • Zaporizhzhya NPP - 6000 MW
  • Rivne NPP - 2880 MW
  • Armenian NPP - 440 MW
In 1986 more than 3100 of company’s employees took part in the emergency response to the Chernobyl NPP accident. On average, about 500 company employees were monthly engaged in activities to remedy the aftermath of Chernobyl disaster, they worked out 118 995 man-hours. For the courage displayed during the elimination of consequences of Chernobyl accident many of company employees were conferred on state decorations.
Company’ specialists participated in the installation of equipment abroad:
Greece (Keratsini, Cardia, Amindion, Agios Dimitrios CHPPs), Bulgaria ( Maritsa-East TPP, Kozloduy NPP), the Czech Republic (Temelin NPP), Slovakia (Bohunice, Mochovce NPPs), Hungary (Paks NPP), Mongolia, Cuba (Juragua NPP), Germany (Greifswald NPP, Boxberg TPP), Iran (Ahwaz (Ramin), Isfahan TPPs, Bushehr NPP), Romania, India, Iraq (Basrah, Najibiyah TPP), etc.
The company has always been a leader of technical advancement developing the best technologies in the heat and power production, which made it possible to achieve excellent results in the time of units commissioning with minimum job costs:
  • Three power units per year with a capacity of 200 MW at Burshtyn TPP
  • Three power units per year with a capacity of 300 MW at Tripolye and Zaporizhzhya TPP
  • Five power units per year with a capacity of 300 MW at Ladyzhyn TPP
  • One power unit per year with a capacity of 1000 MW at Zaporizhzhya NPP
After the transformation of the USSR into separate independent states the company has overcome all trials and challenges that fell upon the Ukraine’s enterprises. In 1994, on the basis of Yuzhteploenergomontazh All-Union Construction & Installation Trust the open joint-stock company Pivdenteploenergomontazh was formed.
Over the years of independence, the personnel of the company have put into service 1000 MW Unit No. 6 of Zaporizhzhya NPP (1995), 1000 MW Unit No.4 of Rivne NPP (2004), completed modernization of 165 MW Unit at Berezovskaya TPP (Belarus), upgrade of 200 MW Unit No. 4 at Starobeshevo TPP with the replacement of an existing boiler for a circulating fluidized bed coal-fired boiler producing 670 tons of steam per hour (2002 - 2004), commissioning of steam boiler with a capacity of 100 tons of steam per hour at SOE Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant in the city of Dnepropetrovsk.
In 2003 and 2007, the company has carried out unique projects on replacement of PGV-1000M steam generators in units No.1 and No.2 of the South Ukraine NPP.
In 2003, execution of a 6 MW CHP plant project for GAK TITAN – the largest producer of titanium dioxide in Eastern Europe, Armyansk, AR Crimea.
In 2004-2006, construction of a blast furnace complex and pellet & coke storehouse at Yenakievo Metallurgical Plant.
In 2006, accomplishment of a "turnkey" boiler station construction project for Kupyansk Dairy Canning Plant – the biggest Ukrainian producer of canned milk products.
In 2009, construction of a coal preparation plant for AT Krasnoarmeyskaya – Zapadnaya 1 Mine - the largest coal handling and processing facility in Europe.
In 2009-2010, construction of a 17.6 MW cogeneration plant for “LUKOIL Energy and Gas Ukraine” refinery.
As a part of the Chernobyl NPP decommissioning, the company has executed a large amount of work, which includes the following construction projects:
Industrial Heating Plant (290 MW ) (1999-2002);
Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant (2001-2003);
Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility (2001-2004);
Industrial Complex for Solid Radioactive Waste Management (2005-2009).
UTEM has also substantially contributed to the project of transforming the destroyed Chernobyl NPP into an environmentally safe area, this includes such projects as: Dust Suppression System of Object "Shelter" (2003-2004), Change Facility of Object "Shelter" for 1430 persons (2002 -2005), a unique project on the Stabilization of supporting structures of Object "Shelter" and other.
The company has a subsidiary company in Moscow, which successfully implements projects in the Russian Federation.
UTEM is a source of skilled personnel - on the basis of its staff there were established trusts "Vostokenergomontazh", "Volgaenergomontazh", "Ukrenergozaschita", "Ukrenergoprom" design institute, many former employees of the company became administrators in the USSR and Ukraine’s ministries of energy, managers of power generating companies in Ukraine and Russia.
AT Pivdenteploenergomtazh is not only a renowned history, but in the first place an impeccable work that gives confidence about the future, and our main goal is to be the best in our field.
